30 May 2023
Principal
Hello Parents and Carers,
It has been a busy start to Term 2. We recently hosted our lovely celebration of Mothers Day with a morning tea attended by mothers, grandmothers and other significant women in our students lives. On the day, our senior students ran a very successful stall selling beautiful and unique products that they had made, both in Art class and at the Enterprise Training Centre. It was wonderful to see our students’ great customer service skills in action.
There appears to be an increase in seasonal illness in the school. I would urge you to keep your child home if they are displaying any symptoms of sickness.
Welcome to our new school board parent representatives, Nicola Townsend, Dwight Maul and Dean Conway. Also welcome to our new staff board representatives Shelia Mondelly, Chris Ralph, Justine Loggenberg and Coutney Smith. The next school board meeting will be held Friday 16th June at 8am in the Staff Room.
We would like to thank Rotary Morley for their kind donation towards tickets for our school ball which will be held in Semester 2.
Upcoming dates:
Friday 2nd June - Room 19 Assembly
Monday 5th June - Public Holiday, no school

Thank you to everyone that supported the Mother’s Day stall and attended the Mother’s Day Morning Tea. A big congratulations to our raffle winners.
There is a lot happening throughout the term. On Friday May 19th Room 12 hosted our assembly and it was also Pirate Day. It was great to see so many pirates around the school. The Sensorium Theatre will be at school from 23 May through to 26 May engaging the students in a range of fun and exciting sensory activities.

Satellite News
Kaya,
Welcome back for Term 2. I’d like to take the chance to welcome our newest member of the Satellite team, Treena Jones. Treena is with us Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday in Sat 2, 3 & 4. I am sure her expertise and teaching experience will be a welcome addition to the group.
It has been a busy start to the beginning of the term with several activities and incursions occurring. Firstly, we had our Anzac Day celebration, every class created a commemorative wreath and some poppies which were presented by each class at the foot of the flagpole during the celebration. A big congratulations goes to Dean Jardine who with the rest of the school leaders did a fantastic job of welcoming the guests and setting up and packing away the venue, well done Dean for taking your role so seriously and doing such an amazing job.
We also had the Yirra Yaakin play Lingo Lah which was very entertaining for the students. The students were able to learn some Noongar Language and take away the positive message from the play of being kind to your friends and family. The students all really enjoyed the incursion.
Lastly Mick Owens from Football Futures has been hosting football (soccer) clinics. Football Futures Foundation is an independent organisation that champions the inclusivity and accessibility of the game. Under the banner of ‘Football for All’, they aim to ensure that all people can play football. Satellite 3 & 4 have had the opportunity to participate in the sessions learning the basic rules and game play as well as having lots of fun with their friends. It has been an amazing program to be a part of.
Kind regards,

Secondary News
News from the Heights,
As always it has been a busy time in Secondary. Everyone is going full bore in class and the students are producing some great work. It is a fantastic time of year with everyone settled and working well.
In case you did not have the opportunity to come to our fantastic Mother’s Day stall it really highlighted the amazing work carried out by our students. Not only did the students make everything (including the bags purchases were placed in) but they worked at point of sale and displayed their brilliant sales, math and interpersonal skills. It was truly a great effort.
On Tuesday the 15th Room 11 had an assembly. This was an unqualified success. The students did everybody proud, and the PowerPoint highlighted the diverse and engaging educational program that is run by Sarah and her crack team. There were heaps of highlights but for me Melakiah stole the show with his signing of the national anthem and his awesome hip hop moves, but everyone should be proud and a new benchmark for great assemblies has been set.
Until next time
Kind regards,
Heath Bradley

Communication Intensive Group
Welcome to Term 2.
We are in the final throws of the Sensorium Theatre incursion, and I can honestly say that the students are fully engaged, actively initiating communication with theatre staff and showing their enjoyment of the sessions. This is a huge hit and the rhyming; phonics and the adaptation of the Wombat Stew are fantastic accompaniments to literacy learning. I hope you enjoy the pictures I collated from teachers.
The Daylight Disco is on Tuesday 6th of June, and it is dancing time. Our students adore this event and enjoy every opportunity to socialise with their peers. A huge shout out to Michelle Toye who oversees this event.
Room 3 has an assembly coming up in week 10 on the 28th of June at 9:15 a.m. and invitations to parents will be sent home. I look forward seeing what skills, talents and learning they are going to showcase for us. Watch this space!
I am away weeks 6 and 7 this term. Please contact the school office during this time if you need assistance for your child in the Communication Intensive classes.
Kind Regards,
Sharon Rollinson
Communication Intensive Program Coordinator

Room 1
This term Room 1 has continued learning about families and special celebrations. We have also taken a step back in time to learn about the origins of these special occasions. We explored Anzac Day using the book “Anzac Ted”, made Anzac wreaths and we absolutely loved making and eating Anzac biscuits. Cooking has quickly become our favourite activity and the highlight so far has been making damper and butter from scratch. This is giving us appreciation of how we survived before supermarkets.
We have also enjoyed getting a glimpse into each student’s family history, using family photos to explore how ourselves and families have changed over time. We can’t wait to see what the rest of the term holds and remember if you can’t find us, we will be in our time machine

Room 2
Room 2 have had a great start to the Term 2, although we are missing Kat and Liam a lot and can’t wait for their return!
We have been exploring Ooblek (corn flour, food dye and water). Some of us have absolutely loved it although it wasn’t a favourite for all. We all enjoyed choosing what colours we would make and then mixing them altogether.
In Physical Education, some of us have been playing T-Ball. We have been building our hand-eye coordination and turn-taking skills. It has been so much fun celebrating everyone’s big hits.

Room 3
Room 3 are having a lovely start to Term 2. We have welcomed a new friend into our class, his name is Arjun and he is settling into his new school with very supportive and friendly classmates.
Each Friday morning, we have been enjoying a Sensorium Theatre incursion! It has been such fun singing, listening to the ukulele, and exploring wonderful tactile and auditory objects.
We have also had fun preparing for Mother’s Day. We wrote sentences about our Mums and enjoyed making some special gifts.
We look forward to what the rest of the term brings

Room 4
In room 4 this term we have been learning about places around the school and in our community. We have also been reading lots of books about dinosaurs and where they use to live. In numeracy we have been learning to sort concrete objects and learning about “same and different”. This term Room 4 has also welcomed a new staff member, welcome to Room 4 Miss Georgie!

Room 32
We’re back for another fun and productive term! We’ve started Term 2 with lots of student and staff changes. Samantha and Mohammad moved to other classrooms, and we welcomed Leo back. Our team of brilliant Education Assistants are: Miss Roxy, Miss Chloe, Miss Miho, Miss Matilda and Miss Antonia. Our theme for the term is People and Places, in particularly within our community. We will be creating lots of discussion and teaching opportunities for our students to learn about the important roles in a community that help us or keep us safe, how to identify them and where to find them. Our artwork, structured play and shared reading will be based on this theme – we can’t wait to show parents all the wonderful work we will do over the term. We are busily working hard on our IEP goals because reporting season is coming up soon. We look forward to another fun-filled term of learning!

Room 10
Students in Room 10 have had a great start to Term 2. In Emerging Literacy, we are enjoying reading the numerous exploits of ‘Pig the Pug’ while our Conventional Literacy group are following the ‘Moon Dog’ adventure series. In maths we are improving our number and pattern recognition along with our maths vocabulary. In science, as part of learning whether items will float or sink, we have been making small aluminium foil boats and filling them with coins and marbles. We are also studying a variety of recipes to learn how to make our own healthy snacks and following our individual class jobs schedule, so we know how to clean up afterwards!

Room 11
Room 11 is happy to be back into routines and are settling in well. Our work is back in full swing, and we are doing a fantastic job.
We will continue focusing on expressing gratitude and kindness in and outside the classroom, working hard towards our IEP goals and using our voices to communicate our wants and needs.
We wish you all a great term; please enjoy our photos.

Room 12
We have been working hard on a range of topics in Room 12 this term. In particular, we have been working hard on our assembly item! Our item is about the days of the week, which has also been a topic that we have been learning during our Maths lessons. We have also been learning about the Nyoongar seasonal calendar during HASS. We are looking forward to more exciting and engaging learning opportunities during the remainder of the year!

Room 13
It’s been a busy start to this term, the students have been busy exploring their five senses in science and these have been incorporated in our art works too. The students have been experimenting with sand, dried herbs, shaving foam, ice, and salt.
In Literacy the students are being exposed to more nursery rhymes and stories on different animals. In numeracy, the students are exploring the concept of big and small; same and different.
The students have been working hard during hydrotherapy too and have made great progress.

Room 14
Room 15
Ahoy there! Room 15 have had a busy start to Term 2. We recently had a great time celebrating our annual Pirate Day - check out our awesome pirate hats. Some of our favourite activities this term has been our weekly trips to the Multi-Sensory Room, bike riding and our gross motor activities. We’ve all been working hard on our gross motor skills, including balancing, throwing and catching. We look forward to seeing what Term 3 brings.

Room 25
We would like to share some of our achievements in Room 25. We have started a cooking program that runs each Tuesday. We are all striving towards independence and Caleb now walks himself to and from the Meet and Greet area. We have all participated in road safety awareness to support this transition. Luke is helping our gardeners as part of his studies, utilising his passion to help out our friendly green thumbs.
Our focus in Room 25 is “RESPECT”. We are practising showing respect in many ways. Each time we demonstrate respect for others we earn a respect card. On Fridays we tally up and whoever has the most cards gets to pick a prize from our prize alley. As a special reward when all members of Room 25 received over five respect cards each we have a pizza party!

Room 26
The students have all settled back into the class routine well and it is great to see them all rested and eager to get back into the school term. There are many amazing activities occurring this term in Room 26. Beginning May 23rd, the Sensorium Theatre are visiting Durham Road School offering a range of fun and exciting sensory activities for the students. On June 14th, the students will be participating in the Kalability Soccer Carnival and all the students are hoping to walk away with the trophy like they did at the Basketball Carnival.
On Tuesday June 20th, Room 26, with Room 27, will be hosting the Secondary Assembly. The students have been working very hard at rehearsals to present a spectacular performance for both parents and students to enjoy. Invitations will be sent home soon.
All the students are working diligently, and it is a pleasure working with them this year.
Thank you for all your support

Room 31
One of the highlights of our busy term has been Mother’s Day festivities at Durham Road School on May 12th. All students in Room 31 pitched in to create edible goodies for the Mother’s Day stall. We made caramel popcorn, hedgehog slice, lemon slice and moulded chocolates. We then worked at the stall, selling the goodies along with the amazing art pieces that were created in Art sessions at the Enterprise Training Centre. This was good practice for handling money, counting out change and working on our customer service skills.
Another great afternoon was our Term 2 Disco: Michelle plays the best tunes and we all let loose and had a dance with our peers from all the other secondary classes. We love the lights and bubbles and enjoy helping Michelle to set them up.
We have been refining our skills at the ETC, including using the plastic injector to make bowls and coasters, and the dremel to smooth out the plastic products. Another important weekly school-based program we enjoy is packing and delivering the pantry bags for families here at school. The best part is visiting lots of classes to deliver the bags.
We continue to enjoy and develop skills at various workplaces outside of school. We always come back with smiles and stories about our fun days out.

Satellite 1
This term we have been learning about ‘living things’ in science and are enjoying growing our beans from seed and planting herbs and flowers in our vegetable garden. The students were very excited to make their special cards and flower pots for Mother’s Day too.
During our inclusion Sports lessons, we have been practising our football skills and building friendships with our mainstream peers. In inclusion Music lessons, we are learning about rhythm, tempo and pitch. It’s always fun to use props such as, boomwhackers to tap the beats and sing along. We all had a great time getting dressed up for Pirate Day and having lots of fun with our friends.

Satellite 2
Satellite 2 have had a busy start to Term 2. We have continued participating in integration classes with Embleton Primary School. In sport we have been learning skills in football and following rules in different team games. Everyone enjoys and looks forward to these lessons.
We have welcomed a new student, Robin into our class this term. Everyone has loved making a new friend and getting to know him.
The students are enjoying their science lessons learning about pushes and pulls, art activities with Miss Treana and reading our Talk for Writing model text, Oh Dear! It has been so much fun saying the story as a class and learning signs to go along with the key words.

Art
A few special Arts events are happening in Term 2. The Arts and Enterprise program held a successful stall for Mother’s Day. Students made many beautiful products to sell. A huge thank you to the staff teams who come down to the ETC to support our students with their arts endeavours.
We have Sensorium Theatre coming to the school and bringing their theatre production ‘Whoosh’. It will be a wonderful inclusive and sensory based production for all secondary students to enjoy.
Music Aviva will also present their Rhythm Works program. This will be for our secondary students, which I’m sure they will enjoy.
This term, we also have a wonderful Indigenous Artist, Joy, coming into Durham to paint a Six Seasons mural with a variety of our secondary students. This mural will be painted in the senior playground.
What a creative term with a variety of mixed media arts activities for our secondary students to enjoy.

Workplace learning
In 2023 some of our students preparing for workplaces are taking part in Certificate courses. These courses require many hours of both face-to-face time and work experience. The students are required to keep log books of the hours they work and tasks they undertake. The work they submit is verified by organisations outside of the school to confirm the quality of their work.
This year we have 10 students taking part in Certificate I Leadership at Durham Road School. We have two students taking part in Certificate I Retail at Cyril Jackson ESC and one who is taking part in units towards Café Culture, also at Cyril Jackson ESC.
Some days feel long and arduous with extensive amounts of book work. In spite of this the students are working hard and have already passed a number of units.
